At the City of London Academy Islington, we have a total commitment, in the pursuit of excellence, to the development of our staff as outstanding practitioners to provide a world class education for all of our young people.
We have been awarded the Investors in People Gold Award in 2014, which is recognition for our absolute commitment to staff development and the support and career progression we provide. Our CPD programmes are scheduled throughout the year and are outlined on our CPD provision map below.
The career development of our staff is an integral part of our professional life at our academy. We aim to ensure all staff reach their potential to be outstanding through a range of high quality CPD that is personalised and has impact. All of those who have trained to teach with us over the last year have been graded as outstanding.
For teaching staff, we have a range of CPD including mentoring and coaching, twilight sessions, CPD groups, Teaching & Learning newsletters, TeachMeets, leadership development and academic qualifications, all of which are key drivers to ensure that teaching at the academy is consistently outstanding and draws on the most effective pedagogical practice.
Our CPD priorities are focused on:
- Improving staff knowledge, skills and practice to improve student outcomes
- Facilitating a professional context in which all staff can develop through a culture of collaboration, underpinned by robust evidence and research
- Keeping staff up to date on current legislation
- Encouraging a culture of life-long learning and reflective practice
Antony Pazik, Teach First participant for Business Studies and Economics
"The City of London Academy Islington has been a fantastic place for me to start my career in teaching. Each week I receive interesting, engaging and relevant training on a variety of different topics that has helped me improve my practice in the classroom. On top of that, I receive regular, actionable feedback from my mentors to ensure I’m able to reflect effectively on my teaching. There is a real culture of excellence here that I’m enjoying being a part of."
Tom Noutch, Teacher of History and Newly Qualified Teacher
"The Academy takes its responsibility as a training provider seriously. I was afforded the opportunity to train through the school, who supported me in successfully undertaking the Schools Direct programme at the Institute of Education, University College London. The school provided high quality mentoring as well as a personalised induction programme for trainee teachers. As an NQT, I continue to receive excellent guidance about improving my practice through the supportive coaching available from experienced staff.
Ahmet Durak, Data and Examinations Manager
"The City of London Academy Islington values the progression and professional development of not only the teaching staff but also support staff. In my 8 years at the Academy, I have been developed from an inclusion room supervisor, to Head of Year, Pastoral Support Leader and now Data and Examinations Manager. Each role has allowed me to develop new skills, such as management of students, line management of staff and now a strategic overview through my data and examinations role."
